My mum just got angry at me for spending a lot of money on sports. She said I wasted time and hundreds on sports such as Muay Thai or rock climbing. In fact, Muay Thai classes are the only investment I made. I’ve stopped wakeboarding which is pretty expensive too. She’s also angry that I spent a lot on travelling, she don’t see the reason why I should travel and see another person’s country. She also does not approve me jogging often because she thought I am just obsessed. Just to tell you, I am a girl but I don’t shop often – buy make up or clothes or shoes every other day. I don’t invest money on facial or hair treatments or manicures. I dine out occasionally and am pretty spendthrift. But when it comes to sports, I don’t mind putting a lot of money on it because doing sports makes me happy. My mum is traditional ( Asian family) and she had a financially rough upbringing. Sometimes though, I want to share what happened in gym or during climbing, but she shuts me off with that condescending tone and I feel sh*tty throughout. What should I do? Should I quit doing sports to make her happy? Or should I continue? Afterall it’s my money I am earning and spending. I guess what she wants is a traditional daughter who does the housework, cook, clean but still gives money to the parents monthly. Does anyone experience the same thing?
